The Volk’s Electric Railway Association 30th Birthday Celebrations
The Volk’s Electric Railway Association (VERA) will be celebrating their 30th birthday on the
20/21 September 2025
On Saturday 20 September VERA are operating events across the whole day.
Trains will run until late with VERA members taking over the running of the railway from late afternoon. Illuminated cars will run into the evening as dusk falls (weather permitting).
At halfway station sheds around 11:00 to 15:00 there will be ‘Punch and Judy’ performances, and the viewing gallery will be open to view the sheds and the scale model of the railway. VERA will be on hand to answer questions about the history of the railway and about the association.
On Sunday 21 September VERA are running tours at halfway station sheds
‘Behind-the-Scenes’ tours will start at 11am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm. We will have a tour around Magnus Volks original workshop going into the cliff wall. Here he would sit in his first-floor office and watch his railways; the Volk’s Electric Railway and the sea going ‘Brighton and Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway’, nicknamed “Daddy Long Legs,”. We will also visit the new lottery funded sheds on the beach where the cars are stored and maintained. Sign up using the QR code or email address below
Wednesday 24 Sept. at Patcham community centre at 19:30. There will a talk titled – ’40 years with the Volk’s Electric Railway’ given by Ian Gledhill. Ian has been volunteering on the railway for longer than he cares to remember so will be giving a personal history of his experiences volunteering and driving on our unique railway at a free talk (donations welcome)
