GBMet (City College) development has started on site

GBMet development, Pelham Street, North Laine
The redevelopment of the College’s city-centre campus commenced mid-August with demolition and vacuum excavation of the car park, demolition of the existing balcony and fire staircase, and a temporary retaining wall on Whitecross Street. During October piling to the foundations commenced, and larger site accommodation was installed.
There were some teething problems from day one about truck movements, acoustic screening, sound insulation and lighting but Willmott Dixon, the main contractor, assured the North Laine Community Association at their meeting on 17 September that they had taken its comments on board to ensure compliance by liaising regularly with residents. A drop-in session for local residents was held at the site on 18 October.
Unfortunately truck movements are still using and causing traffic problems in Trafalgar Street, contravening their Construction Logistics Plan.
Monthly newsletters from Willmott Dixon are available from Rachel.foy@willmottdixon.co.uk for those who wish to be added to the email list.
GBMet say that the c3,000m2 extension will create a welcoming new ‘shop front’ for the College set within a large public space that includes secure bike storage for staff, students and visitors.
During the 18-month development, the College will remain open as usual, with no disruption to current course provision or existing facilities.
