According to local news, the planning application will be available to view and to comment on at the end of the year.
Prior to that, however, we are assured that the designs will be shared with key stakeholders and residents before the full planning application through exhibitions and an online survey, so please look out for the information. Ignore the stock image of the building if you have seen it in the newspaper.
The plans include a wide mix of facilities, including a 25m pool, a much larger fitness suite, a leisure water area, a 6-court sports hall, a minimum 100-station gym and interactive cycling studio, studios and group exercise space, a family entertainment zone and on-site car parking (possibly in an under croft).
The council is proposing a capital investment of up to £65 million in the project as part of its ongoing commitment to invest in sports and leisure facilities across the city and anticipates work to begin on site early in 2026. While the work progresses, the centre will be kept open as long as feasible.
It should be noted that the planning application will relate only to the new centre – not the proposed residential development.
