THE BIRDCAGE BANDSTAND — more
The City Council has decided to fund the restoration of the bandstand itself. Giles Ings of DRP Architects has been appointed to supervise the work.

Fiona Atkinson has been appointed to design the area around the bandstand.
- It is hoped that the work will receive approval by the end of May '08, that work on site will begin in August and that it will be completed by the Spring 2009.
- The bridge to the Promenade will be reinstated, a glazed railing railing will be constructed inside the existing railings, to satisfy Health & Safety requiremnets, and there will be discreet CCTV cameras and lighting on the Bandstand itself.
- The original wind break screens will also be reinstated.
- There will be a café, serving cold food (so as to avoid the need for large ugly ventilators) at ground floor level, with kitchen, WCs and stores in the basement. The cast iron pillars will be retained.
There are about 30 layers if paint on the Bandstand, so the chosen colour has still to be determined.
